This is a simple and easy recipe for delicious sandwich spread appetizers. Puerto Rican Sandwich Appetizers or sandwichitos are a staple at any latino family gathering or party. It is one of the fastest recipes you can make. It’s a big hit with everyone and I can guarantee you will not stop at one because they are addictive! There are many different versions of this sandwich spread and you can definitely add any other ingredients you might like. I’ve seen people add a little onion, hot sauce and even mayo. The base ingredients are always the same, cheese whiz, spam, and red pimento. This is the way I make it at home with the classic 3 ingredients and we love it! Credit where credit is due: shout out to my mom in law for teaching this Honduran the ways of Puerto Rican cuisine!
A great idea I learned was to make your sandwich with white sliced bread and cut them with any shape cookie cutter for that extra personal touch. Make those little rattle sandwiches for a baby shower or you can make a princess extra happy with little crown ones. Kids will love it!
sliced bread (or dinner rolls)
1 can of spam
1 jar of cheese whiz
1 small jar of red pimentos
(if you’d like you can add a little bit of milk for a more creamy texture)
A food processor or blender is the only appliance you will need. You can cut up the spam into smaller pieces or cubes so it’s easier to break down. Put the spam and pimentos in first and pulse it a few times to help break it down and combine. Then, add your cheese whiz and blend until smooth. Remember to clean around the walls of your container to help everything combine properly. This is when you can add a little bit of milk if you want an even creamier texture.
After your mix is complete, make as many of the sandwichitos as you desire and if you have any spread left save it for another day. Enjoy!!
