Thanksgiving weekend we had the pleasure of attending our second New York City Children’s Theater show, Ballerina Swan and the Nutcracker. This very kid-friendly and interactive show, based on the book, Ballerina Swan- by Allegra Kent, is about a cheerful ballet dancing swan named Sophie who is eagerly preparing for her first performance in “The Nutcracker.” Sophie and her fellow dance friends are rehearsing and preparing for the show when they are told that a new mysterious member coming all the way from Australia will be joining them. The newcomer’s arrival is not easy for one of Sophie’s friends and this sets out a very surprising chain of events.
The show was heart-warming, charming, and entertaining for adults and kids alike. The story included some classic music from “The Nutcracker” with a beautiful story line about bravery, self-acceptance and conquering your fears. The graceful and elegant dancing by the professional dancers was great. It was my first time seeing a live ballet performance and I loved it. The theater was small and intimate, perfect for children that might find a big, dark theater overwhelming. I really loved how the whole cast includes the kids in the audience to “perform’ along side them. This show is perfect for your aspiring ballerina or dancer. My little girl was a bit shy, but as soon as we got home she practiced all the new moves she had learned. I know both my kiddos learned very important lessons that can be applied to their everyday lives!
